Minneapolis, Minnesota - Environmental Information (EI) Limited has released its annual report on the commercial hazardous waste incineration market. The annual report is done as part of a series of reports on the hazardous waste market offered by EI’s subscription-based consulting service, the EI Digest. The company reports annually on key sectors in the hazardous waste management including commercial energy recovery of hazardous waste, fuel blending of hazardous wastes, solvent recovery and hazardous waste land disposal.

Overall the commercial hazardous waste incineration sector has undergone a significant adjustment in capacity. The sector in North America has only 12 incinerators as compared to the 23 that were operating in the mid 1990s. The majority of these closures were in the United States, where today there are only 9 operating facilities. The closures have meant that hundreds of millions of dollars in private investment capital have been lost.

However, until the recent recession, there was a steadily increasing demand for commercial incineration. The peak demand for hazardous waste incineration occurred in 2000 when nearly 770 thousand tons were combusted in North America. The demand in 2004 was approximately 24% lower at 582 thousand tons. A variety of reasons have contributed to the decline ranging from the transfer of US manufacturing to overseas facilities to relaxed standards for cleanup of contaminated sites.

Demand for the sector’s service are likely to increase in the near future as captive combustion facilities face deadlines to upgrade their emissions to meet the same standards that were previously imposed on the commercial facilities. Many of the private combustion units are older, smaller units. It is speculated that many of these units will continue operating without making improvements until forced to close by regulatory deadlines.
