For Immediate Release - June 23, 2004
Minneapolis, Minnesota – Environmental Information Limited today announced the release of the first of a series of twenty five EI Digest reports on hazardous waste management in individual states to be issued in 2004. The focus of these studies is to examine 1.) overall trends in the amount of hazardous waste managed, 2.) trends in the amount of hazardous waste managed captively and commercially, and 3.) trends in the specific types of hazardous waste management utilized.
These reports are being prepared to help the environmental services and technology sector examine the extent of the current outsourcing of hazardous waste management and the potential for new outsourcing amongst companies that currently manage their own waste. These opportunities vary from state to state; depending on the demographics of the manufacturing sector is that state.
"In many states, there are a relatively small number of manufacturers that generate much of the state’s hazardous waste," stated EI Researcher Karl Joyce. "It is important for environmental services to know who these facilities are so that they can target their marketing efforts. For example, our first report found that 99% of the Alaskan hazardous waste that was managed commercially came from only 18 sources."
The reports also provide insight into how each state’s waste is managed and the trends in that management. For example, in the most recent reporting, about 33% of all Alaskan hazardous waste managed commercially was placed in landfills. Historically, however, this was not the case. These types of yearly reporting variations are common and illustrate the challenges facing environmental services trying to determine sustained commercial demand and the types of services needed to service that demand.
The state market reports are a two-year project being undertaken by the EI Digest during 2004 and 2005. The first report, Estimated Hazardous Waste & Wastewater Management – State of Alaska, is available as a free sample on the EI Digest webpage at Envirobiz.com.
