Minneapolis
based Environmental Information Limited released a new report, Overview
of Hazardous Waste & Wastewater Market in Mississippi, the twenty-sixth
in its series of reports analyzing commercial hazardous waste market
opportunities. This report once again found that trends in overall hazardous
waste management in the state was not reflective of trends in the demand for
commercial hazardous waste management services.
As with many other states
studied to-date, overall trends in the generation of hazardous waste in the
state were significantly influenced by management of high volume wastewater.
More specifically, in the case of
Mississippi
, reported volumes of hazardous waste dropped precipitously between 1997 and
1999 due to decreases in reported captive deepwell injection activity by two
manufacturers. More recently, overall state volumes have increased dramatically
once again – up nearly 400 thousand tons – due to resumed reporting of
deepwell injection activity by one manufacturer.
According to the most recent
data, estimated commercial waste management opportunities in Mississippi
amounted to approximately 22,000 tons; a major increase over the five year
period. Commercial energy and metal recovery were the services in highest
demand. As with other states that have been researched to-date, a relatively
small number of hazardous waste generators represented a major percentage of the
state’s market opportunity in terms of waste volumes.
