Minneapolis, Minnesota The EI Digest: Hazardous Waste Marketplace, North Americas leading research service on hazardous waste management, announced the results of its annual survey of the commercial boilers and industrial furnaces (BIF) sector. The report reveals that the 21 commercial BIFs in Canada and the United States utilized approximately 1.17 million tons of hazardous waste fuels in 2001. This was a decrease a decrease of 9.3% from 2000, when 22 facilities reported utilizing 1.29 million tons of hazardous waste fuels.
"Prior to 2001, increasing waste fuel volumes accepted by facilities and decreasing capacity within the sector indicated improving economic conditions in the BIF market," comments EI Researcher John McMurray. "2001 was an off-year for hazardous waste generation due to a downturn in the economy. When the economy improves, manufacturing firms will again be producing greater volumes of hazardous waste that can be used for fuel."
"Over the last decade, the balance between demand and supply has improved considerably," says EI Senior Analyst Cary Perket. "The sectors challenges are primarily because their suppliers, hazardous waste fuel blenders, are in a fierce price competition with each other for market share. When this price competition gives way to a more efficient and rational consolidation of regional market share, the BIF sector will benefit."
