Minneapolis, Minnesota The bright 35" x 23" reference color map the fifth edition for 1999-2000 released by Environmental Information Limited provides hazardous waste generators with a quick and easy reference. The map identifies the generic types (landfill/incineration) of treatment and/or disposal services at each facility.
Of the approximately 600 commercial facilities involved in commercial hazardous waste management in Canada & the United States, 321 provide treatment and disposal services. Among these 321 are a relatively small number of commercial boilers and industrial furnaces (20), incinerators (25), and landfills (25). The approximately 300 other facilities not directly involved in treatment or disposal (therefore not on the map) play an important role in assisting with the collection, temporary storage, and transfer of waste to treatment and disposal facilities.
"Since the first reference map was issued in the early 1990s, there have been numerous changes with each map," states EIs Cary Perket. Among them are:
Addition of Canadian facilities
Better classification of treatment and disposal facilities
Closure of a significant number of facilities
Opening of new facilities
Many name changes due to mergers and acquisitions
"We are in the midst of a major transition in this sector," comments EIs Perket. When the next map is produced for 2001-2002, he expects there will be:
Approximately the same number of facilities owned by a smaller number of firms
More of the historic names associated with the field (e.g. Rollins Environmental Services) will have disappeared, having been acquired or merged into other corporations
New names, like Onyx Environmental Services (former facilities of Waste Management)
The first map was produced as a cross-reference with the EI Hazardous Waste TSD Directory. In the interim, the printed directory has given way to EI Hazardous Waste TSD Database, which is now available on Envirobiz (http://www.envirobiz.com). The reference map provides an easy to use, visual reference.
Environmental Information Limited also provides a subscription-based research service, the EI Digest: Hazardous Waste Marketplace. EI will now provide compliance information for commercial TSD facilities entitled the EI TSD Audit and Compliance Service which will be delivered over the Internet.
The new reference map costs $59.95 (includes shipping & handling). Credit card orders can be placed by calling 612-831-2473 extension 10.
