St.
Louis Park, MN — The EI Digest:
Hazardous Waste Marketplace, North America’s leading research service on
hazardous waste management, announced the results of its annual survey of the
commercial boilers and industrial furnace (BIF) sector.
The report reveals that 22 commercial facilities in Canada and the United
States utilized approximately 1.20 million tons of hazardous waste in 2002. This
was an increase of 3% from 2001, when the same facilities reported utilizing
1.17 million tons of hazardous waste.
“The volume of hazardous
waste accepted by BIFs increased every year from 1996 to 2000, before decreasing
in 2001,” comments EI Researcher John McMurray.
“The volume of hazardous waste utilized by the sector again increased
in 2002, but the volume is still below pre-recession utilization.”
“The sector’s situation
has not really changed that much from last year,” stated EI Senior Analyst
Cary Perket. “The market is still
experiencing negative impacts from the current recession. The hazardous waste
fuel suppliers to the BIFs, the independent TSDs that collect and blend
hazardous waste into fuels, are still fiercely competing for market share on the
basis of price.”
