Minneapolis, Minnesota Environmental Information Limited, the nations leading research firm on the commercial hazardous waste management sector, released results from its new report, Hazardous Waste Generators Management Preferences USEPA Region 1. The report examines the management of hazardous waste generated in Region 1 as well as the commercial treatment and disposal within the Region 1. The report is based on biennial reports required to be submitted by both hazardous waste generators and facilities.
The EI research report is about 1 million tons lower than USEPA estimates primarily due to substantially lower estimates of non-wastewater hazardous waste generation. EI estimates regional non-wastewater generation to be about 170 thousand tons annually or only about 13% that reported by USEPA. "This is a result of additional quality control that we did on the generator and facility data," explained researcher Karl Joyce. USEPA Region 1 is one of the smallest USEPA regions in non-wastewater hazardous waste generation.
USEPA Region 1 consists of the States of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Research found that generators in Region 1 sent waste to every other region in the United States as well as Canada for management. Region 1 is dependent on the use of commercial hazardous waste management facilities in other USEPA regions to satisfy its treatment and disposal needs. "The fact the waste generated in Region 1 is sent to every other USEPA Region is reflective of the highly competitive situation in the commercial hazardous waste management sector," stated senior analyst Mr. Cary Perket. "It definitely should not be interpreted as their being a need for the region to develop additional commercial capabilities. This is certainly not the case." Region 1 has 15 commercial treatment facilities that have the capabilities to treat some of the waste generated in the region. The commercial facilities within the region also treat waste from other USEPA Regions. Services not available in the region, such as incineration and land disposal, are available in adjacent or nearby regions.
This report is the first in a series of ten reports being prepared by Environmental Information Limited on each of the ten USEPA regions. Further information can be obtained by contacting Environmental Information Limited in its San Diego office at 858-488-4760.
