Minneapolis, Minnesota – Coinciding with the new release of the 2003 Commercial Hazardous Waste Recycling, Treatment, & Disposal Facilities, EI is announcing its most recent statistical summary of commercial facilities. EI has identified 367 such facilities in Canada and the United States. “Since we began providing these statistical summaries in 1984, there has been a steady decrease in the number of commercial hazardous waste facilities,” says Karl Joyce, an EI researcher who worked on the compilation of data for this latest report. “However, there are still many different choices available to manufacturers and other sources that produce hazardous waste”.
Many facilities offer more
than one type of treatment and disposal services onsite. The total number of recycling, treatment and
disposal service locations are:

EI Senior Analyst and Company President Cary Perket says “it became apparent in the 1990s that anticipated government efforts to regulate more manufacturing waste as hazardous was not going to occur, causing a slow but steady decline in the number of commercial facilities. As a result there is a greater balance today than in the past between the supply of commercial facility capacity and the demand for such services.”
