Minneapolis Minnesota – February 8, 1999 – Environmental Information Limited (EI), the nation’s leading research firm on the commercial hazardous waste sector, has identified 14 Canadian and 307 United States commercial hazardous waste treatment and/or disposal facilities currently in operation. The annual census does not include commercial hazardous waste storage and transfer facilities of which there are at least 200.

The census of commercial hazardous waste treatment and disposal facilities is being released in the form of a wall reference map. This is the fifth edition of this popular reference. The map is coded to differentiate the basic types of treatment and/or disposal services available through the various facilities. The census data is also available in database format on ENVIROBIZ (http://www.envirobiz.com).

The number of certain types of hazardous waste facilities has declined over the last several years, but the number of facilities on the map has increased as EI identified additional facilities and revised the criteria for inclusion on the map. Among the types of facilities that have declined in number are commercial boilers and industrial furnaces that use hazardous waste as fuel (21), commercial hazardous waste incinerators (25), and deep-well injection facilities (9). The new map includes more hazardous waste landfills (25) and other various types of treatment facilities.

"We began providing information about hazardous waste facilities to environmental professionals in the form of directories in 1983. It was not until the early '90s that we began periodically issuing this wall reference map," says EI President Cary Perket. "Over the last decade, we have made it our business to have the best available data on the commercial hazardous waste sector. The fact that we continue to add facilities is a reflection of our continuing research efforts."

"The complete series of reference maps makes a chronology of the commercial hazardous waste management sector's maturation," Perket stated. "When you compare the original with the most recent reference map you get a feel for the degree to which acquisitions, closures, and mergers have reshaped the commercial hazardous waste marketplace. Facility and company names associated with the very beginnings of the industry have mostly disappeared from the map."

The 35" x 23" Commercial Hazardous Waste Treatment & Disposal Facility wall map is available for $59.95. Credit card orders can be placed by contacting EI at (612) 831-2473. Checks payable to Environmental Information, Ltd. should be mailed to P.O. Box 390266, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55439-0266.
