Market Trends for Commercial Hazardous Waste Landfills
EI Digest Special Report
Description: The annual EI Digest Special Report on commercial hazardous waste land disposal has been prepared since 1990. The report’s focus is to provide and analyze trends in the amount of hazardous waste being land disposed at commercial hazardous waste land disposal facilities.
Background: Hazardous waste land disposal’s purpose is the safe destruction of hazardous and toxic substances in waste. Typically, the land disposed substances are not economically viable to be otherwise reused or recycled. The land disposal of these substances is done using sophisticated land disposal design and technology. The commercial hazardous waste landfills are extensively regulated by federal and state environmental regulatory agencies.

Some of the waste land disposal by commercial hazardous waste landfills is generated from manufacturing processes (“manufacturing wastes”). The other source of the waste comes from remediation of contaminated sites, plant closures, and off-specification products (collectively know as “event wastes”). The amount and proportion of manufacturing and event hazardous wastes varies from year to year at individual landfills. In addition, many of the landfills also receive significant quantities of nonhazardous wastes.

Scope of Report: The scope of the report includes the 3 major commercial hazardous waste facilities operating in Canada and the 17 major commercial hazardous waste facilities operating in the United States. This report provides overall commercial hazardous waste land disposal trends from 2000 through 2009. The delineation of the demand into categories of hazardous and nonhazardous waste begins in 2001.
Reports Purpose: This report is prepared for owners and operators of hazardous waste management landfills and similar stakeholders that require the most accurate, current market intelligence available on the annual demand for commercial hazardous waste land disposal services and available capacity to commercial dispose of hazardous waste.
Principal Author: Mr. Cary Perket has over 30 years experience in hazardous waste management. Mr. Perket background includes regulatory positions with State of Minnesota and Wisconsin hazardous waste programs, consultant to manufacturers on hazardous waste management, management of superfund and other remediation projects, and the permitting of waste management facilities. He has been involved with every EI Digest report on landfills since the EI Digest was started in 1989.
Report Contents: This report contains confidential, proprietary data that is not publicly available. The key contents are as follows:
  • Total tons of hazardous waste land disposal 2001 – 2009

  • Total tons of hazardous and nonhazardous waste land disposal 2000 – 2009
